In contrast, a prime characteristic of Orthodox architecture is its respect for the construction material and its endeavor to bring out the "inner principle" [logos] in the material, the "rational" potentialities of the material itself the architect seeks to enter into "dialogue" with the site and with his building materials. Orthodox churches seem to grow out of the earth; they are not imposed on it. The same can be said of bells.
